Keeping calm in a crisis

From time to time does your life seem to be spinning out of control? It certainly has seemed to be a recurring situation in my life recently.

In the past month I have had internet and server problems, which is not so good when you are running a business with an online store. Our phone line was down; we continue to have problems with our vehicle and dishwasher, and the constant saga with elderly in-laws.

The stress level raised last week with an article deadline, the internet was down again, and I was informed by a peer that they liked my website so much that they had decided to copy it - design, content and photos (which has now been resolved). To cap it all the battery in the fire detector was low so every few seconds it beeped, and I was unable to remove the battery.

My homeopath always ensures me that things will pass, and sometimes things get so out of hand that one can see the funny side of it when telling others of all my woes. The same can be said after receiving a text from a friend describing their awful stressful day.

For general stress Rescue Remedy is useful to have on hand. It can help you to face the situation in a better frame of mind, and will help to reduce your fear and nervousness. What can the Bach Flower Remedies do for you?

The Bach Flower remedies were created over seventy years ago by Dr. Edward Bach and his intention was that they were to be a simple system of self-healing.
“I want to make it as simple as this: ‘I am hungry, I will go and pull a lettuce from the garden for my tea: I am frightened and ill, I will take a dose of Mimulus.’ (Dr. Bach - The Medical Discoveries of Dr. Bach).

In 1934, Bach wrote the following concerning the way his flower remedies work:
“They cure, not by attacking the disease, but by flooding our bodies with the beautiful vibrations of our Higher Nature, in the presence of which, disease melts away as the snow in the sunshine. There is no true healing unless there is a change in outlook, peace of mind and inner happiness.”

So what would you like the Bach Flowers to do for you?

Heal Thyself.

In this hectic World, with busy schedules, families to care and worry about, constant communicating with the latest gadgets, it is hard to find time for ourselves.

As a Doctor, Homeopath and healer Dr. Bach was very observant of how people lived their lives and how it affected them emotionally.

In his book 'Heal Thyself', his opening paragraph in Chapter 7 states: "And now we come to the all-important problem, how can we help ourselves? How can we keep our mind and body in the state of harmony which will make it difficult or impossible for disease to attack us, for it is certain that the personality without conflict is immune from illness." 

His six points to help ourselves are:  

To considers the mind, and suggests "If we could set aside a short time every day, quite alone and in a quiet place as possible, free from interruption, and merely sit or lie quietly, wither keeping the mind blank or calmly thinking or one's work in life,  it will be found after a time that we get great help at such moments and, as it were, flashes of knowledge and guidance are given to us."

Develop virtues and to strive to develop the qualities in our lives we know are missing.

Try to have zest for life and to develop a joy in the adventure of our journey through life. Watch for opportunities, slow down and notice what is going on around us.

Appreciate the simple things in life; go for a walk on the beach, watch the sun-set etc. Don't let your smart phone control your life and it can be switched off!

Put away all fear and to look on the brighter side of life. "Fear in reality holds no place in the natural human kingdom, since the Divinity within us, which is oneself ,is unconquerable and immortal ... and have nothing of which to be afraid." 

Lastly, to care for our bodies - to eat healthily, have a moderate amount of sleep, and get plenty of sunshine and fresh air. "Without too much identifying ourselves with our bodies we should treat them with respect and care, so that they may be healthy and last the longer to do our work."

Precious pets - a further understanding

We must strive to learn love of others, beginning perhaps with one individual or even an animal, and let this love develop and extend over a wider and wider range, until its opposing defects will automatically disappear." Dr. Bach - Heal Thyself.
Our pets are an important part of our families, and are the ones that usually greet us with much delight and enthusiasm.  So when something seems to be wrong it is a great worry because they cannot tell us how they feel.

Once they have been checked out by the vet to make sure there is nothing physically wrong, we can turn to the remedies to help with their emotions. General rules to thumb before selecting a remedy we need to ask ourselves:

It is probably best to try one remedy at a time to see if it works or not.  If it is not needed it will cause no harm. The dosage is two drops from the stock bottle and four for Rescue Remedy.

As the remedies are preserved in 27% grape alcohol they can be diluted in water, put on a treat, or applied topically.

Flower Remedies keep pets healthy and happy

The Bach Flower Remedies are a natural way to keep your pets happy and healthy. They offer a gentle means of relieving negative attitudes, and because they are prepared from flowers and trees, none of which are poisonous, they provide a harmless, non-habit forming system of healing. Animals will often react quickly and well to the remedies, so treatment is usually between three and ten days. The aim of diagnosis is to establish the animal’s state of mind and to choose the appropriate remedies for them.

It is important to note that the remedies will not change the inherent temperament of a particular breed or animal, but will help bring them into balance. The remedies do not treat any medical conditions directly. Sick animals should see a vet first. The remedies are complementary, do not interfere with medication, and help to speed up the healing process. They help with everyday stressful situations, or when your pet needs help overcoming a variety of emotional or behavioral problems:

Selecting remedies for animals may seem daunting at first as they can’t tell us exactly how they feel, but by observing and empathizing with them it is possible to read their behavior and identify their emotions. Animals use verbal communication to some extent, but non-verbal communication is usually the best guide to how they feel. In selecting remedies for your animals keep a close watch on their body language and behavior patterns and look for any changes according to the breed. Look too for events and changes that might be putting your animal under stress. Happy and contented animals enjoy life and have fewer health problems.

Rescue Remedy is a combination of five remedies: Star of Bethlehem (shock), Clematis (faintness, lack of focus), Rock Rose (terror and panic), Cherry Plum (loss of self-control), Impatiens (agitation and irritability). It can help whenever your pet is under stressful situations and needs some help to stay calm and in control. For example: visits to the vet, being left alone, adapting to new surroundings, and fear of loud noises.

Many people give remedies to animals in their watering bowls or food. The dosage here is two drops of each selected remedy (four of Rescue Remedy) per bowl. For larger animals, such as horses, add five drops of each individual remedy and ten of Rescue Remedy. Alternatively you can make up a treatment bottle. To do this add two drops of each individual remedy (up to seven max) to a 30ml bottle of water. A dose is four drops from this bottle, and you should give at least four doses a day. The treatment bottle dosage is the same for small and large animals alike. If you are including Rescue Remedy in the treatment bottle add four drops instead of two to the treatment bottle. Use until symptoms improve.

There are many ways to give treatment bottle doses, so pick the one that suits you. Some choices are to drip doses onto pads, paws, nose or ears so they will be absorbed through the skin or licked off. You can put four drops of the remedy mix on food or onto pet treats. If using a sprayer bottle spray in the mouth or around the pet. If pets share water, the remedies won’t have affects on other pets if they don’t need them. There is no worry of over-dosing.

Bach Flowers for men

Whether it is a result of their upbringing or an inherited tendency to take more risks, men as a whole tend to pay a great deal less attention to their health than women do. In general, men are reluctant to admit they need help with their health, despite suffering from the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle.

The aim of the Bach Flower Remedies is to promote and maintain mental and emotional health in all situations and stages of life. Positive thinking and emotional health give you a head start whenever you are faced with a specific problem.

I will focus on two aspect that affect men, which are having a mid-life crisis and hair loss.

Once men are in their middle years, 40 to 60-age range, they begin to look back on their lives and wonder if they have achieved their dreams/ambitions, and feel as though time is running out. This can bring on anxiety, depression. resentment, plus physical symptoms such as tiredness.

As the individual’s emotional state is the single and entire cause of the problems associated with a mid-life crisis, the Bach Flower Remedies can be particularly helpful. Some examples are:

· Walnut can help to make changes and break old unwanted links to ways of life that are now past.
· Larch can assist with a loss of confidence.

Hair loss is more common in men than in women, which can be a sign of ageing, hereditary, or brought on by illness. In some cases, it can be joked about by family members. The remedies can assist in helping to remove the unnecessary negative thoughts that are so often felt by people losing their hair; they can also reduce the likelihood of stress making the problem worse. Some examples are:

Helping women adjust to the 'change'

Menopause can affect us emotionally and physically, and the Bach Flower Remedies can help us get through this. ‘Change’ is the key word, and this period in a woman’s life demands great adjustments. The remedies show us the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ to a new way of life. It does not mark the finishing post but is the beginning of a new way of life.

In my early 40s myself I have not experienced any of the joys to come, but have researched it extensively in Bach Flower Books and on the Internet. I have been hearing first hand from my sister that she is experiencing perimenopause and consequently done her own research. As a result organic tofu and Soya are on her family menu quite often.

One of the key remedies is Walnut as it can help us adjust to periods of upheaval and change, and therefore helpful during any major milestone. Star of Bethlehem is for any sadness experienced at the loss of youth.

Quite often women’s emotions take charge and she finds herself weeping or shouting or shaking without having any control. Generally, women become more sensitive during menopause and can easily take things to heart. This may cause a certain amount of moodiness. Beech alleviates feelings of intolerance and being critical; Cherry Plum can alleviate us from loosing control i.e. weeping, shaking etc; Scleranthus brings back stability to any fluctuating moods; Willow helps to alleviate resentfulness.

Depression can be common during menopause; remedies that can assist are Gentian, Gorse and Wild Rose. Gentian helps you to get back on track; Gorse assists with restoring hope when you have reached the point of giving up. Wild Rose helps to bring a sparkle back in our lives.

Very often menopause and insomnia go hand in hand. In fact recently when I help a study group entitled ‘coping with insomnia’ most people there were menopausal women. Sleep deprivation can leave you feeling exhausted and can really disrupt your day. Lastly the most well known symptom of menopause is hot flashes, which tend to be induced by excitement, anxiety and nervousness. Treat emotions to cope with insomnia

Do you lie awake at night with thoughts racing around and around? It is not easy to shut-off the days anxieties, worries and stress. In our fast-paced busy lives there are a lot of factors that can lead to insomnia. The term insomnia refers to an inability to fall asleep or to remain asleep for an adequate length of time. This may causes chronic tiredness that badly affects your daily life.

Most people can overcome their insomnia by a variety of ways, but it is advisable to consult your GP if insomnia persists. Some possible ways are; taking a warm bath, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, light exercise, reading a book until you feel tired etc. Another option is the Bach Flower Remedies, which are natural, entirely safe, and gentle, non-habit forming and they will not interfere with any other medical treatment or modalities. Coping with depression the Bach Flower way

In our fast-paced, daily, busy lives lots of factors can lead to depression, or perhaps the dark gloomy wet short days just begin to get to us. With spring around the corner, longer days, bulbs surfacing it is a time for new beginnings. That is where the Bach Flower Remedies can help to put a lighter spin on everyday issues.

The word ‘depression’ applies to a whole range of emotions, from the mild discouragement we feel at missing a bus to major depression, a serious mental illness with a variety of symptoms including guilt, fatigue, and exaggerated fears. A major depression would call for a number of different remedies and would also require medical help.

Decision-making – with a little help from the Bach Flower Remedies

Another year gone by, Christmas and all the festivities over, now it is back to reality. Now what … same old same old routines? Or have you made some New Year’s Resolutions so you can start afresh? It sometimes seems that New Year’s Resolutions do not come to fruition half the time, good intentions or not.

The question is do you just want to break old habits or are you ready for something a bit more major such as a career change or moving. Need some assistance with decision making/ uncertainty? Schools out, company coming, planning a trip, deadlines to meet at work before going away? Summer can be a very stressful time, with a full house of kids and all the extra work that summer brings.

Going on vacation, for instance, brings along its own stressful situations, such as finishing everything at work, deciding what to pack, and the thought of the long delays at the airport. Then there are the arrangements to cancel the mail, finding someone to look at the pet etc?

Sometimes you need a vacation after a vacation for a rest!

At this time of year, with the wet cloudy weather, and the onset of the flue season, it is easy to feel slightly under the weather. Fortunately, there are options out there to keep yourself healthy, and ward off any nasty bugs and germs.

Dr. Bach who discovered the Bach Flower Remedies in the 1930s believed that, “Disease is the re-action to interferences. This is temporary failure and unhappiness and this occurs when we allow others to interfere with our purpose in life and implant in our minds doubt, or fear, or indifference.”

Dr. Bach was more interested in treating the individual and not the disease and said, “There is no true healing unless there is a change in our outlook, peace of mind, and inner happiness.” His remedies basically deal with the ups and downs of everyday life – worry, depression, fear, stress – naturally, safely and side-effect free. Concentration has been defined as "the ability to direct one's thinking in whatever direction one would intend". We are all able to concentrate some of the time, but it is very easy to drift off into our own thoughts.

When we are writing an exam or test, we often feel nervous, and really have to try hard to concentrate on the question at hand. Or when we are doing a boring task it is very easy to go into our own little world. Sometimes it can be dangerous to ‘switch off’, so to speak especially if we are driving.

Some barriers to concentrating are boredom/daydreaming, anxiety, and distractions, all of which can find a solution in the Bach Flower Remedies.

Daydreaming:
For daydreaming you can turn to Clematis, which is for those people whose minds tend to wander to imagined futures. Sometimes when you have some boring monotonous tasks to do, such as housework it is very easy to think of other things to do, checking email springs to mind. So when I know housework has to be done, I often Hornbeam, and everything that needs to be done, gets done. Hornbeam assists us with the strength and ability to face the day’s work with energy and a clear head.

Anxiety/worrying thoughts:
White Chestnut is a useful remedy to assist with repetitive worrying thoughts going around and around, stopping us from concentrating on the here and now. When they come at night they may cause insomnia, while during the day we might find it more difficult to concentrate on what we should be doing. The positive potential for White Chestnut is a peace of mind. The head is clear; thinking is under control and can be put to positive use in problem solving. Worry is replaced by trust in a positive outcome.

Keep a positive mind to combat Cancer

The word cancer can set off alarm bells, and there is a sense of fear and dread. Cancer seems to be so prevalent these days, and more and more people are affected by it either directly or indirectly.

The Bach Flower Remedies can assist on the emotional level, because our emotions can play havoc when fear and shock are involved. A positive state of mind helps us to stay focused on getting better.

Dr Bach’s philosophy was that a healthy mind is the key to recovery, and the Bach Flower Remedies work by gently restoring balance to negative emotions. Everyone starts the New Year with resolutions, and one of the most common ones is to loose weight, especially after all the festive treats have been playing havoc with the waist line. Weight loss is not just about eating less, but a lot of emotional issues are tied to it, e.g. wanting to feel good about yourself, what others think of you, and self-control.

In fact it can be pretty daunting wanting to loose weight, as there are some many different ‘diets’ to choose from, and so-called miracle pills and potions etc. Basically it is probably best to try and eat smaller portions, and exercise more, so dieting does not have to cost a fortune. Doing exercise does not mean having to join an expensive gym, just a half an hour walk will do it, and if you have a dog all to the better as it gives you more of a reason to go out.

Coping with pain and inflammatory conditions with the Bach Flowers

Pain is a very common complaint for people these days, in particular because the population is ageing, and can significantly interfere with a person's quality of life and general functioning.  The longer you live the onset of arthritis is a common complaint and there are over 100 different conditions, which include fibromyalgia and gout.

Inflammation is involved in many forms of arthritis, and is the body’s natural response to injury and general wear and tear. The warning signs associated with inflammation are redness, swelling, heat and pain.  As a result of one or more of these symptoms the normal use of the joint can be limited and very painful.

Fibromyalgia is widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, and affects approx 3 in 100 Canadians (mostly women). This condition also causes people to have trouble sleeping, feeling tired most of the time, numbness in muscles and joints, poor memory and concentration, depression and headaches.

Gout is a type of arthritis that results from too much uric acid in the body and affects 1 in 30 Canadians (mostly men).  This excess of uric acid affects the joints, causing pain, swelling and tenderness particularly the big toe, ankle, knee, foot, hand, wrist and elbow.

Bach Flower Remedies for Pets

I don’t know about you but sometimes my family thinks I love the pets more than them! Maybe it’s because they provide unconditional love, are always happy to see you, and do not answer back. 

Up until recently our dogs (Harry and Alice) were predominantly outdoor dogs and happily roamed our yard until Harry hurt his leg.  Now that he needs bed rest they are both residing in the kitchen, and most likely that is how it will be. It is very worrying when your pet is sick or injured because they cannot tell you where it hurts or what is wrong. 

As our dogs are so much a part of the family they seem to be getting the royal treatments right now, fancier meals, various supplements and even Reiki treatments!  The Bach Flower Remedies are coming into their own also helping Alice and Harry adjust to their new way of life and new surroundings. The following Remedies are currently being given to our dogs.

De-cluttering made easy with the help of the Bach Flower Remedies

Recently I went to a presentation about Feng Shui for success and after having had the Feng Shui consultant around to our house, have consequently been changing all the furniture around and de-cluttering.

All the desks are now facing the doors, pictures of water have been taken out of the bedroom, and today I bought some wind chimes.

Interestingly enough every room and part of room depicts certain subjects like wealth and blessings, and helpers and travel for example.  Since I want to go to Hawaii I focused on the living room.  Some chairs were moved, all the black and white photos are on the mantelpiece and I sorted out all the books on the shelves.

My tidy desk is now arranged to bring about wealth and blessings.  It will be interesting to see what unfolds. Another big task suggested by the consultant was to completely empty the garage, and wash it out and then replace only the items that we needed neatly.

All in all what we have done so far has been a lot of work.  It is not always easy deciding what to get rid of etc.  This is where the Bach Flowers come into their own, helping with the emotions that are attached to them.  Which books to keep or take to the consignment store, this can cause guilt by discarding books that were gifts or ones that we have had a long time but not looked at in years.

It’s early June and summer has arrived early in the Comox Valley.  With the long sunny days and the hot rays of the sun it is important to protect our skins from the glare of the sun.  Covering up and a good sunscreen are a must.

Right now our yard is green and lush, the grass is growing at a great rate and there seem to be more weeds than ever, so we are spending a lot of time outside. To help deal with bug bites, scrapes, scratches, sunburn etc it is useful to have Bach Rescue Cream on hand which is beneficial for external traumas.  If you apply it quickly enough there will be no sign of bruising.

Rescue Cream contains natural ingredients to which Rescue Remedy and Crab Apple have been added, making it a very versatile, soothing and healing salve.  Its application should be when the skin has been cleaned

In fact it has come to my daughter’s aid many a time, and one occasion springs to mind. Before she was about to dance on stage she was accidentally hit by a trolley in the nose. . How do I administer it?
In an emergency Rescue Remedy can be taken neat from the bottle, four drops at a time either directly under the tongue, or on pulse points. Otherwise put four drops in a glass of water and take frequent sips until the emotions have calmed.

Getting into the groove to go back to school

The hot lazy days of summer seem to go on forever and ever.  Trips to the beach to try and escape from the heat, visiting family, and sitting curled up in the shade reading your favorite book.  But at the back of every child’s and parents mind is the thought of going back to school.  There is a constant reminder because all the stores are full of school supplies, and every media outlet is reminding us that a nasty flu bug is lurking around the corner.

My daughter will be going to High School this fall, and keeps saying that she is excited yet nervous.  This is when the Bach Flowers come into their own to assist with her niggling fears and possible stress.  The adjustment from Elementary School is High School is rather daunting.  On the plus side they get electives, but I think the main problem is the fear of getting lost for the first week or so.  Her particular school is very large and like a maze, in fact it has been described to be like Hogwarts (but without the moving stair cases).

The remedies that will be going into her personalized remedy bottle are Aspen, Mimulus, Larch, Walnut, Olive, Crab Apple, and Rescue Remedy. For myself I will be taking Red Chestnut.

Aspen and Mimulus will help ease the fears and worries.  Aspen for fears and anxiety, when you are unsure of what could happen, those niggling anxious feelings that seem to pop up from time to time. Apprehension is replaced by a desire for a new adventure and new experiences, disregarding any difficulties that may arise with reassurance. Larch provides confidence to get through the day, and the ability to cope with any setbacks that life throws your way.  Nothing will stand in your way. Walnut is the protector from change and outside influences (people and germs). It is rather a shock to the system to get used to going to a new school, and Walnut is the protector from discouragement and negative situations.

If you are feeling worried about all the germs that may be floating around a large school or public place, Crab Apple is the cleansing remedy, and helps you to feel purified.  Don’t forget to wash you hands thoroughly all the time also.

After a summer of late nights and arising late in the mornings, Olive is the remedy to provide you with the energy to get through the long school days, homework, and journey to and from school.

The Festive Season is just around the corner, but it's hard to imagine with all the warm sunny weather we have been having recently. Gift giving is one of my biggest challenges. Spring cleaning solutions with the Bach Flower Remedies

Spring seems to have arrived earlier this year, and the crocus and daffodils are poking up ahead of schedule. With the brighter days and the sun shining into the living room, alas it shows up all the dust and consequently the need for a good spring clean.

Yes, the Bach Flower Remedies can help with giving you the motivation to get on and do a minor or major clean up and de-cluttering. I just can't seem to get the house clean, despite scrubbing it from top to bottom. It has taken me hours to get everything sanitary, but however hard I try, it still looks dirty. You would not think that I go through this ritual every day.

Another thing that is bothering me right now is my hair. Despite my best efforts, every day seems to be a "bad hair" day. The fact that I wash it several times a day does not seem to help in the slightest. I cannot possibly go out in public looking like this. If, and when, I do go out, I put on my smartest clothes, wear lots of makeup to hide my awful complexion, and I wear a hat.

Crab Apple, thank you for helping me to put things in perspective. I don't know why I worry about my complexion, it only has a few blemishes, and nobody else would be able to see them without a magnifying glass. The house is not that bad; I guess I have been going a bit over the top with cleaning. I am just going to chill out and relax for a while in my nice clean house.

The blossoms on the Crab Apple look fresh and clean, like freshly washed sheets hanging on the line. The white flowers are tinted with pink, and the petals are heart shaped.

Declutter without overwhelm

Now that Christmas is over, the two main themes of products in stores seem to be Valentines’ day and items to help us clear out our clutter. I do like to de-clutter from time to time and always feel better for it, as it makes the house seem tidier and bigger.

For some just the thought of de-cluttering is overwhelming. This can be attributed to not knowing where to start so put it off, not wanting to part with their treasures for sentimental reasons, and because they may have some use one day.

This is where the Bach Flowers come into their own, helping with the will power to get started and with the emotions that are attached to your treasures.

Flying the Nest...

Now that my son has been accepted into University he will be "Flying the Nest..." this Fall, consequently I have been trying to prepare myself and of course him for this mile stone. I am beginning to gather together everything I think he may need from towels, plates, peanut butter etc. which are going to be placed in a ‘Big Wide World’ Box. I have warned my husband that once we have dropped him off at the tender age of 17 going on 18 I may cry all the way home!

Sometimes I find it difficult to get to sleep at night especially when I have a lot on my mind or have a big event coming up. The longer I am awake the more sensitive/intolerant I am to the temperature in the room, or listening to snoring. Looking at the clock seems to make things worse. Then of course the next day one can feel groggy and unable to get as much achieved, so it tends to be a vicious circle.
